Southwestern Community College
Getting a college education can be very important for your your life. But not all people have the luxury of pursuing higher education. For some people, going to college is a luxury because of limited resources such as time and finances. THese resources are needed to get into the best schools and colleges. Luckily, there are also several locations that offer more than just one school or college. These schools that are easier to access while still providing the same quality education. In the state of North Carolina, there are several good schools there including Southwestern Community College.
Southwestern Community College is a 2 year college found in Sylva in the state of North Carolina. Southwestern is a school that provides lower level tertiary education and post-secondary education. The school also grants certificates, associate degrees, and diplomas. The school is also one of the 59 members of the North Carolina Community College System.
The school first started in 1961 when there was a need for training skilled textile workers brought from North Carolina State Trade and Industrial Education department in Jackson County. Jackson County responded and sent representatives and started handling training classes in schools and in other counties. The NC Board of Education also gave the school equipment and logistics. The school soon started hiring instructors, and a panel was set up from the counties to oversee the training.
Then in 1963, Jackson County purchased 17-acres of land for relocating the college. By the next year, almost all of the construction for the building was completed, with local masonry students providing much of the construction work. Most of the students were locals who had been taking classes in local trade schools, and were ready for hands on experience.
Southwestern College experienced large growth of incoming students throughout the past three decades. The school soon evolved into a legitimate college that provided technical training, adult education needs, and college transfer credits. In the late 80’s, Southwestern Technical College started offering associate degrees and soon changed its name to Southwestern Community College to reflect its role in the local community. In 2006, Southwestern Community College partnered with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and established the Oconaluftee Institute for Cultural Arts in Cherokee or OICA. In 2007, the school opened the Macon Center found in Franklin.
